I wanted to post this as a lesson for others looking for a pet with their hearts set on a puppy or kitten.
Maestro, or Bartholomew as he was known, was older (7 years) and larger (16 lbs) than most cats at the Shelter, and no one there that day wanted him. Luckily one of the volunteers saw me looking in the cage. When I put my finger in he came right over.
Long story short, I could feel a connection and so I adopted him. Since taking him home, every day Maestro demonstrates that it was the right decision. He has now made friends with all my neighbors and has truly made dozens of people in the neighborhood happy.
All this from a cat that everyone (including my fiancé) thought was too big and too old to make a good pet. Glad he proved everyone wrong.
