We are excited to participate in an event with a group of local students who will be coming to NEAS to read to our pets. This program will provide a relaxed environment, which allows students to practice the skill of reading. Some children have difficulties reading. They are often self-conscious when reading aloud in front of other classmates. By sitting down next to a pet and reading to the pet, all threats of being judged are put aside. The child relaxes, pats the attentive pet, and focuses on the reading. Reading improves because the child is practicing the skill of reading, building self-esteem, and associating reading with something pleasant.
This is not an open event but we hope to encourage more like this in the future. For more information please contact Jen at volunteer@neas.org
